Human-Centered Machine Intelligence Lab

The Human-Centered Machine Intelligence Lab was established on July 1, 2020 in the Department of Computer Science at National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan.

Our research spans neuroimaging, computational neuroscience, medical AI, and human-centered intelligent systems. We study how the human brain encodes information and how machine intelligence can be designed to better support people.

We aim to develop trustworthy, explainable, and practical AI technologies that augment human capability rather than replace it.

Our Research Areas

We combine human-centered design, machine learning, and neuroscience to build reliable and impactful intelligent systems.

Fairness-aware, explainable deep learning for melanoma classification across patient groups

Medical AI

Trustworthy Medical AI

We develop fair, robust, and explainable medical AI, uncovering hidden shortcuts and overconfident failures, and closing performance gaps across patient groups with diffusion-synthesized data and self-supervised learning.

Brain encoding and decoding

Neuroscience

Brain Encoding and Decoding

We investigate how the brain encodes information and decode neural activity from EEG, MEG, and fMRI, including brain-computer interfaces for imagery and speech.

HCI

Human-Machine Interaction

We design adaptive interfaces guided by neural and physiological feedback, from expression-aware assistive systems and scent experiences to AI co-design tools for architecture and interiors.

Computational neuroscience

Comp. Neuro

Computational Neuroscience

We develop statistical and computational approaches for brain modeling, representation analysis, and neurobiologically informed machine learning, including aligning deep networks with brain activity to reveal their biases.

Ultrasound images of malignant and benign pleural effusion with model heatmaps

Computer Vision

Medical Computer Vision

We apply vision transformers, segmentation networks, and medical foundation models to chest X-ray, CT, ultrasound, and echocardiography, with multicenter validation and methods for long-tailed and few-shot learning.

Network combining 3D chest CT with age, sex, and clinical test results

Clinical Informatics

Multimodal Learning for Health

We fuse medical images, clinical records, and public health data, from predicting cardiac arrest in the ICU and distinguishing heart failure subtypes to linking satellite imagery with population health.

Two-stage multi-agent workflow integrating urodynamic, MRI, and neurophysiology data for clinicians

Decision Support

Clinical Agents

We design reinforcement-learning doctor agents for ICU ventilator management and multi-agent workflows that help clinicians make sense of multimodal patient data.

Digital Health

Speech & Behavior Analysis

We detect early dementia with transformer-based speech and language models, video behavior analysis, and eye tracking, across languages including Mandarin.
